I can't really say I expected much either, what with it being so cheap. Its made of a fairly cheap plastic, and fits into the end of the lens where the cap should go, so you cannot use this and a cap at the same time while storing it. As the other reviewer stated, on lenses below about 24mm you can see the larger ends of the tulip. Wouldn't recommend this at all, even for people just getting into photography. Either stick with your lens' manufacturer's hoods, or at the very least get fotodiox hoods. There is a reason this is under $5, and canon and nikon hoods are $20 or more.
For something less than 5$, I was not expecting too much. I'm a budget photographer and this thing does a decent job. But when you are using the 18-55 mm EF-S lens fully zoomed out, you can easily see the edges of the tulip hood. So when using this, make sure to shoot 24mm and over. If you are doing wide angle, don't buy this. Took a while to line the threads up but fits on decent, but has alot of thread to spare and looks unprofessional.
